BiographyBelgian painter and graphic artist, born in Brussels of a Russian father. He studied at the École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture et des Arts Décoratifs, giving particular attention to the techniques of book illustration and typography. In 1947 he became a member of the association JEUNE PEINTURE BELGE and in 1949 joined the COBRA group. In 1951 he severed his connection with COBRA and settled in Paris, where he studied graphic techniques at Studio 17 under S.W. Hayter. At this time he made contact with Japanese calligraphers from Kyoto and in 1955 he travelled to the Far East and produced a film called _Calligraphy japonaise_. In 1961 he visited the USA and during the 1960s he travelled there and in Mexico and the Canaries, afterwards settling in Paris.(From _The Oxford Companion to 20th-Century Art_ edited by Harold Osborne)
