Taniguchi Kökyö

Japanese, 1864 - 1915
BiographyBorn in Osaka. Real name Tsuchinosuke. He entered the school of Köno Bairei in 1884 and studied nihonga with him. He became a teacher of the Kyoto School of Art in 1894 and also at the Kyoto Municipal School of Painting from 1909 to 1912. He won the third prize at the fourth Interior Industrial Exposition of 1895, the Copper Cup at the International EXPO 1900 in Paris and the third prize in the first Bunten in 1907. He was known as the first artist of historical painting in Kansai and was well acquainted with traditional practises. (The Female Image: 20th Century Prints of Japanese Beauties.
