Ōkōchi Yakō

BiographyŌkōchi Yakō (大河内夜江, 1893–1957) was a Nihonga painter. He was born in Yamanashi prefecture. His personal name was Masayoshi 政宜. Graduated from Kyoto Municipal School of Fine Art (see Entry B1). He studied painting under Kikuchi Keigetsu (菊池契月, 1879-1955). He was well acquainted with such artists as Tomioka Tessai 富岡鉄斎, Aoki Mokubei 青木木米, and Uragami Gyokudō 浦上玉堂. He was well trained in the subject of Chinese painting and calligraphy. He excelled in landscape paintings and bird-and-flower paintings, to which he applied the techniques of Yamato-e painting. He repeatedly received the tokusen award at the Teiten exhibition. He died in 1957 at the age of 64.
