BiographyBorn in Kyoto. Real name Kenjirö. Studied ukiyo-e from 1909. Graduated from the Kyoto Municipal School of Painting in 1918. Worked at the film company Shöchiku as a theatrical designer. In 1922 published ‘Collection of creative prints by Kampö’. Together with Miki Suizan he worked on the revival of ukiyo-e in Kyoto. His prints of actors, landscapes and maiko were published by Satö Shötarö from 1922 until 1923. In 1923 he founded the Association of Antiquities Studies. He was absorbed by the study of customs and manners in history as is seen in his publications Nihon füzoku shi (‘History of Japanese manners and customs’) and Obi no hensenshi (‘History of the trasition of the Japanese sash’).
