Hashimoto DokuzanJapanese, 1869 - 1938

Hashimoto Dokuzan (橋本 独山, 1869–1938), known also as Dokuzan Gengi 独山玄義 was born in Uonuma County, Niigata Prefecture. In addition to Dokuzan, some of his other artist names (yagō) were Nan’enkutsu 南苑窟, Taiunkutsu 対雲窟, Ryūhō 流芳, Boun 暮雲, and Daichin 大椿. He began to train as a Buddhist priest under Iyama Masayoshi 我山昌禎 at Tenryūji Temple 天龍寺 and received the artist name of Gengi 玄義 at that time. In 1897, he became the head monk 僧堂師家of Sōkokuji monastery 相国寺, and the following year, he became the 128th leader (kanchō 管長) of the temple. In 1927, he opened Nan’enji Temple 南苑寺 in Tōhaku County, Tottori Prefecture, where he went into retirement. His disciples included Yamazaki Daiko山崎大耕, Umetani Kashu 梅谷香州, and Ito Takamune 伊藤敬宗. He studied painting with Tomioka Tessai (富岡鐵斎, 1837–1924) and excelled in calligraphy.
