Grossman-Moody, Ltd.

American, founded 1936
BiographyIn 1927 Texas-born interior designer George H. Moody moved to Hawai'i from New York where he had worked for a well-known jeweler. After arriving in Honolulu he quickly established himself as a designer, incorporating motifs found in Asian and Oceanic cultures into his jewelry, furnishings, and furniture. Moody became head designer for the Honolulu branch of the San Francisco-based store S. & G. Gump and Company when it opened in 1929. He adopted ancient Hawaiian motifs as well as images of island flora and fauna as part of the repertoire of the thriving business. In 1936 Moody left Gump's and formed with Edward Shepard Grossman a new business, Grossman-Moody, Ltd., a decorating firm that specialized in jewelry and custom furnishings as well as interiors. Many of the objects in this case and the one opposite including the silver-plate chargers with floral designs and the ceramic bowl in the shape of a cup-of-gold blossom were retailed by Gump's and Grossman-Moody.
