Ogura Ryüson

active c. 1880 - 1881
BiographyCuriously, almost nothing is known about this Meiji artist of woodblock prints. His corpus is small, but genrally of high quality, marked by skill and poetic charm. Indeed hisimaginative use of atmospheric effects often proves finer than Kiyochika and seems closer to the art of Hiroshige in this respect. His prints were often produced in two versions, one of them coated with varnish in imitation of Western oil painting.
