BiographyHine Taizan (日根対山 , 1816–1869) was a literati painter at the end of the Edo period. He was born in Hine County, Izumi Province (modern-day Izumisano City, Osaka Prefecture). He was also known commonly as Hineno 日根野. His personal name was Morinaga盛長, and his style name (azana) was Seigen 成言. He was also known by the artist names of Chinu茅海, Kinrinshi 錦林子, Dōrakuen 同楽園, Un’enrō 雲煙楼, and Suikokuan 酔墨庵. He first learned painting from Tosa artist Momoda Eiun (n.d.), and after moving to Osaka City, he studied Nanga from Okada Hankō 岡田 半江, 1782–1846, see Entry 44). At the age of 28, he moved to Kyoto and studied Chinese classical studies and calligraphy under Nukina Kaioku (貫名 海屋, 1778–1863). Strongly influenced by the Maruyama faction, he was appointed to the Nanga painter Tetsuō Sōmon (鐵翁祖門, 1791-1871). He excelled at landscape painting. His disciples include the female painter Noguchi Shohin (野口小蘋, 1847–1917), Inuse Tōnui (猪瀬東寧, 1838–1908), Oku Randen (奥蘭田, 1836-1897), the female painter Atomi Kakei (跡見花蹊, 1840-1926), and Nakamaru Seijūrō (中丸 精十郎, 1840–1895).
