Katō BaiōJapanese, active 1829 - 1860

Katō Baiō (加藤梅翁, active 1829–1860) was a painter during the Edo period. His personal name was Masatsugu 正継. Other names of his include Shōtei 蕉亭 , Baikaen 梅花園, and Kawasaki Baiō 川崎梅翁. He was particularly famous for his ink paintings of plum trees. His students included Tazaki Sōun (田崎草雲, 1815–1898), who began to study with him in 1829. He was friends with Tani Katō Baiō (加藤梅翁, active 1854–1860) was a Nanga painter during the Edo period. His personal name was Masatsugu 正継 or 正嗣. Other names of his include Shōtei 蕉亭 , Baikaen 梅花園, and Kawasaki Baiō 川崎梅翁. He was particularly famous for his ink paintings of plum trees. His students included Tazaki Sōun (田崎草雲, 1815–1898) and Kakei Umeya 筧梅屋 (n.d.). He was friends with Tani Bunchō (谷文晁, 1763–1840).

The connection between Baiō and Kawazaki City is based upon a section of the text Nihon Meirokuden『日本名婦伝』 by Yoshikawa Eiji 吉川英治 entitled "The Wife of Tazaki Sōun" 「田崎草雲の妻」, which mentions, "He was the hermit Katō Baiō from Kawazaki."「川崎の隠士加藤梅翁だった。」.
