Yashima Gakutei

Japanese, c. 1781 - 1870
BiographySUMMARY: Yashima Gakutei, whose dates are unknown, worked from the 1810s to the 1830s. His personal names were Harunobu and Sadaoka. His studio names include Ichirö, Gogaku, and Hoköyö. Most of these "nom de plumes" occur in his fine book illustration, although the signature Gogaku was also frequently applied in his "surimono" and album sheets. Early sources suggest that he was originally a scholar, literary man and poet, but that he soon studied ukiyo-e -- first under Shunshö and then Hokusai. More recent studies suggest that he studied painting under Hokkei (Hokusai's most famous student), but it may be that their relations were more a friendship than that of master and pupil. He was a native of Edo, but he apparently lived in Ösaka in the 1830s. His dated works span the years 1823 to 1834.
