BiographyBorn in Edo. Name include Tai or Nagami Masanosuke and gö Gekkö, Kagyösai, Meikyösai, Nen’yü, and Rösai. Took the name Ogata because a descendant of Ogata Körin requested that he inherit the name. Self-taught Japanese-style painter, printmaker, illustrator, and decorator of pottery and lacquer. Member of Meiji Fine Art Society. Assisted Okakura Kakuzö in founding Japan Youth Painting Association (Nihon Seinen Kaiga Kyökai) in 1891. Many prints in late nineteenth century. Series entitled Beauties at Famous Places (bijin meishö awase), 1901-1906, published by Matsuki Keikichi. Selections from One Hundred views of Mount Fuji won a gold medal at St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904. Another print from the same series dated 1916.
