BiographyBay Area artist Roy De Forest taught at the University of California, Davis, from 1965 until he retired in 1992. Colleagues at Davis included Robert Arneson, William T. Wiley, and Wayne Thiebaud. De Forest was born in Nebraska and raised in Washington state. He attended the California School of Fine Arts and studied with figurative painters Elmer Bischoff and David Park. Primarily recognized as a painter, he fabricated increasingly detailed carved and painted wooden frames for his paintings and drawings. These eventually grew into wall reliefs that were true hybrids of painting and sculpture incorporating childlike, energetic, three-dimensional appendages and colorful characters.
