Maile Yawata

American, born 1946
BiographyMaile Yawata was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting, Drawing and Printmaking and a Professional Diploma in Secondary Art Education from the University of Hawaii. She also worked as an artist’s assistant while living in California and learned some of the uses of hard materials such as ceramic, glass, and stone as applied to public art.

Maile has worked as a professional artist and educator for many years. She has designed and executed site specific murals commissioned for public areas such as Palolo Community Pool, the Honolulu International Airport and the Castle High School gymnasium. These were commissioned by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, the Department of Education and the City and County of Honolulu/CETA. Others were created for businesses and private residences.

Maile has taught drawing, painting, ceramics and mural making through the Department of Education’s Artists-in-the-Schools program, Hawaii Arts Alliance, Honolulu Academy of Arts, University of Hawaii, and the Department of Parks and Recreation and taught all grade levels, including adults. She has conducted teacher workshops for professional development through the Hawaii Arts Alliance. More than a dozen exterior murals were created at public schools with students under her guidance. The most recent mural project was at Shafter Elementary School and involved all of the students in the school. The mural (60’ x 4’) was painted with acrylic paint and it’s theme is health.

Currently (this document was created in 2009), she is exploring the interface between cartoon heads and ceramic sculpture. She is a member of the Hawaii Craftsmen and the Honolulu Printmakers and works in the mediums of lithography and woodblock printing as well as ceramic.
