DescriptionProbably used as support for a canopy over venerated Buddhist image. Wood: vitex of the verbena family; irregular cylindrical shape; with top brade and bottom stand. Pillars entirely covered by small gold highlighted relief carvings of figures, clouds, buildings, and landscapes (2”of tops, 12” of bottom are bare). Carved and gilded decoration illustrates scenes from the life of the Buddha: #1 left front: Majesty Column, showing homage to Buddha; #2 left reaf: Pilgrimage Column, pilgrimage in 55 stages; #3 right front: Meetings column, showing 9 meetings; #4 right rear: Kuan-yin Column, forms of Kuan-yin, 38 episodes.
