DescriptionView into interior of a house with traditional features (tatami, shoji); family grouping includes woman nursing baby, little boy reading, woman playing koto, woman drinking tea, and man reading newspaperBetween the sliding walls of a house, five Japanese figures in kimonos kneel on the straw mat on the floor. Each is absorbed in his occupation. A woman, the nearest and most central figure, kneels on a cushion with back to observer, strumming a string instrument. A man, partially hidden by the right wall, reads a newspaper. Between them a woman sips tea. To left of benter, a boy, back to observer, reads a book, and beyond him, a woman nurses a child. In background and transluscent checkered screens, windows and doors. In the foreground are two steps, on which are five pairs of slippers. Colors are light brown, blues and reds.
