BiographyDoi Gōga (土井聱牙, 1817–1880) was a Confucian scholar and calligrapher. He was born the second son of Doi Tokkei, a Confucian physician for the Isetsu Clan in Ise Province (modern-day Mie Prefecture). His personal name was Yūkaku 有恪 and his style name (azana) was Shikyō 士恭. He was also known commonly as Ikunosuke幾之輔, Gōga聱牙, and Shōkei松径. He studied under Ishikawa Chikugai石川竹厓 and Saitō Setsudō 斎藤拙堂. He worked as an assistant teacher and a lecturer at Yūzōkan 有造館, an Edo-period school for the sons of the warriors of the Isetsu Clan.Further info on the artist can be found in Literati Modern.
