BiographyKatsuda Tetsu (勝田哲, 1896–1980) was a Nihonga painter. He was born in Kyoto. His personal name was Tetsuzō 哲三. He studied at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (Tokyo bijutsu gakkō) and graduated from the Kyoto Municipal Painting School (Kyōto shiritsu kaiga senmon gakkō 京都市立絵画専門学校, originally known as Kyōto fu gagakkō 京都府画学校, now the Kyoto City University of the Arts). He entered the painting school Sanae-kai 早苗会 (see Entry C4) led by Yamamoto Shunkyo 山元春挙 (1871–1933) , and studied alongside Kawamura Manshū (see Entry 26). He displayed his paintings in the Teiten and Bunten exhibitions. Later, he devoted himself to teaching at Kyoto Higher Crafts School, where he taught Asada Takashi 麻田鷹司, Kayama Matazō 加山又造, Domoto Hisao 堂本尚郎and others. He produced historical paintings and portraits of women. He was a member of the Nitten Association (see Entry D9d). He died in 1980 at the age of 84.
