BiographyOkamoto Ryūdō (岡本龍堂, b. 1898) was a Nihonga painter who specialized in bird-and-flower imagery. His works are distinguished by their naturalistic use of color and careful attention to botanical detail. Like the animal paintings of other artists represented in this collection, they represent a style of Nihonga painting that, while utilizing organic pigments and other materials particular to Japan, employ methods of shading and composition strongly reminiscent of European academic painting.
