Kitagami SeigyūJapanese, 1891 - 1970

Kitagami Seigyū (北上聖牛, 1891–1970) was a Nihonga painter born in Hokkaidō. His personal name was Ri’ichirō 利一郎, and other pen names included Hokuzan 北山 and Chiryū 池龍. He was the nephew of Kitagami Junzan 北上峻山. He moved to Kyoto and studied under Takeuchi Seihō (see Entry 81). He was particularly proficient at realistic bird-and-flower paintings. He displayed his works in the Bunten and the Teiten exhibitions. After the Pacific War, he held several solo exhibitions. He died in 1970 at the age of 79.
