BiographyBorn in Seattle in 1939, Shimomura received a B.A. degree from the University of Washington, an M.F.A. from Syracuse University, and an honorary PhD from Kansas University,where he taught from 1969-2004, earning a distinguished professor award in 1994. He has had over 150 solo exhibitions of paintings and prints, as well as presented his experimental theater pieces at such venues as the Franklin Furnace, New York City, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, and The Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC. He is the recipient of more than 30 grants, including 4 National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships in Painting and Performance Art. Shimomura's work is in the permanent collections of over 100 museums nation wide including the Smithsonian American Art Museum,Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, LACMA, and many others. His personal papers and letters are being collected by the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC.
