BiographyBorn in Washington, D.C., sculptor, painter, and printmaker. Studied at the Art Students League in New York, Howard University, the University of Iowa, and Art Institute of Chicago. Active participant in the civil rights movement, producing work concerned with social need. Spent time in Mexico, drawing inspiration from its social climate and social realist masters such as Diego Rivera. As an African American artist, much of her work focuses on the struggles of Black people
