DescriptionPart of a set containing pair of six-fold screens (3454 and 3455) and a book (3455c) charting locations in Kyoto. Interspaces contain gold clouds with raised embossed designs. Black lacquered wood frames. Subject matter: the Gion Matsuri held yearly between the 17th and 24th of July, including marchers in traditional court costumes, archers, mounted warriors, 2-wheeled oxcarts, the 4-wheeled “hoko” with a high pole on the roof drawn by men and a “Yama flaots” with miniature mountains surmounted by a single tree and carried on men’s shoulders. The Gion festival commemorates the deliverance of Kyoto from a terrible pestilence in the year 874. Portuguese (or Dutchmen) appear on 2nd panel of right-hand screen. Also has a miniature accordian pleated book charting the locations depicted in the screens.
