DescriptionJuröjin, god of longevity, one of the seven gods of good fortune; is seated under an overhanging pine with a tortoise at his feet and a stag by his side, all symbols of contented old age. He wears a grey, blue and white scholar’s robe and holds his sacred staff or shaku. The brush strokes here describe fine details and provide shading almost in a Western manner. The signature roughly translates “The age I have attained so far is 83 years. The old man, Zeshin.” (Year of execution: 1889).
