DescriptionThe ink landscape depicts a river scene with boats near the shore and pavilions and trees on the bank. The painting is executed in the spontaneous haboku (broken ink) style. The Honcho gashi (17th century) states that Tozen came from Matsuura, Hizen (near Nagasaki on Kyushu) and studied painting with Sesshu Toyo (1420-1506); he also studied Chinese paintings of the Song and Yuan dynasties. The poetic couplet at the top of the scrol was inscribed by the monk Sakugen Shuryo (1501-1579); the same couplet appears on a painting attributed to Kenko Shokei in the Matsuoka Museum. (see Nihon ga senshu (Tokyo: Matsuoka Museum, 1990, pl. 46). The couplet reads: Where the duckweed ends, one sees the mountains' relflections, When boats from Chu return, one dreams of the sound of the grass. (Kiin Kensai sho).
