DescriptionTwo sets of playing cards with 100 cards in each set. Each card has black calligraphy over a decorative brushed gilt and white ink design on thick paper; gilded on verso. Each set has its own case; blueish-black and gold brocade over thick paper, with a bone? clasp. One set of cards bears the first three lines (17 syllables) of a Tanka (31-syllable poem); the other set bears the last two lines (14 syllables) of the poem. The poems are from the early 13th century anthology, Hyakunin Isshu or “Single Poems by 100 Poets” (the most common source after the middle of the Edo period), organized in rough chronological order, beginning with Emperor Tenji (626–671) and ending with retired Emperor Juntoku (1197–1242).
See records for each card pair (12957.001ab through 12957.100ab).
