Hiratsuka Un'ichiJapanese, 1895 - 1997

He was born November 17, 1895, in Matsue, Shimane Prefecture. Resides in Tokyo. Studied Western-style oil painting at the Hongo Institute and with Ishii Hakutei and Umehara Ryüzaburo; prints, with Igami Bonkotsu. Has taught widely in Japan and , in 1943-44, in Peking; now teaches at his own institute. Has published works on pint techniques and appreciation, ancient roof tiles, ancient religious folk prints, haiku, etc. Other interests include ancient calligraphy, handmade Oriental papers, Stone Age tools of Japan, and the Bunraku puppet theater.
