Tamagawa Shüchö

Artist Info
Tamagawa ShüchöJapanese, active 1790 - 1803

Shûchô was a pupil of Ippitsusai Bunchô and one of several minor artists who followed in the wake of Utamaro producing art in his style. Although not judged a great master, his style is quite recognizable, borrowing from both Chôki and Utamaro but lacking in vitality.

------

Several minor artists followed the style of Utamaro, often producing minor masterpieces in the master's style. In order to capitalize on Utamaro's tremendous popularity, prints close to the master's style were often unsigned. Signed works by our artist reveal that his style falls somewhere between the rather erotic aspects of a true Utamaro and the more subtle refinement of Chôki.
