Shibayama Kazuko

In the winter of 1948, a woodblock print entitled, “Trees and Houses”, post card size, received a special recommendation award at the Middle and High School Woodblock Print Contest which was sponsored by the New Japan Woodblock Print Society. I was then a first year student at the Tokyo Jogakkan Middle School, aged 13 years.

In the spring of 1949, a woodblock print entitled, “The Meiji Shrine Treasure House”, double post card size, was hung at the Mitsukoshi Department Store Exhibition Hall. Her Imperial Highness, Princess Mikasa, indicated that she liked the print very much. I was greatly honored by her admiation and recognition of my work and to have her singularly express her desire to want my woodblock print, I was, therefore, honored to present her with a complimentary print.

My latest work is entitled, “Ikeno Daira”, size 8 x 16. It was the result of a ski trip I took to Nagano-Ken in the winter of 1955. The print was hung at the Bumpodo Gallery during the month of March 1956.

I began to seriously study woodblock printing under Mr. Un-ichi Hiratsuka when I was 19 years old.

I am now a third year student at the Womens’ Art University, Tokyo, Japan, and am studying Creative Designing. I am now 21 years old and live at : 2 Miyashita-cho, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo, Japan.
