Torii KiyotsuneJapanese, active 1750 - 1770s
Torii Kiyotsune (Daijirö), a pupil of Kiyomitsu I and son of the theatrical publisher Nakajima-ya Izaemon, produced a large number of book illustrations and a small number of single-sheet prints in three-color "benizuri-e." His single-sheets, usually of actors, are rather stilted designs done in the manner of Harunobu. Some are remarkable, but most are conventional productions which were probably inexpensive and popular in their own time. The Michener Collection contains eight "hosaban" actor portraits by Kiyotsune.
