Hashiguchi Goyo graduated from the Tokyo Academy of fine Arts in 1905, having mastered both Western oil painting and Japanese-style painting. He prepared careful sketches for his prints but left production to a skilled engraver and printer to accomplish the final product. His fourteen known surviving prints date between 1915 and 1921.
