Born in Kobe. Given name Sötarö. Studied Tosa, ukiyo-e, and Shijö-style painting; eventually developed a personal style. Exhibited bird and flower paintings and landscapes in Bunten. Illustrator for Yomimuri Shinbun and the journal New Novel (shin shösetsu).
