Totoya Hokkei

Artist Info
Totoya HokkeiJapanese, 1780 - 1850

SUMMARY: Often regarded as Hokusai's best pupil. Before coming to Hokusai's studio for training, he is supposed to have studied under Kanö Eisen. His signature appellations not only included Totoya, but Owoga, Kiosai, and Kiyen as well. He has left us several book illustrations dated between 1803 (Shungyö-jö) and 1848 (Haikai hiakkachu). It is in his finely executed "surimono", however, that Hokkei achieved considerable fame. He was able to add an other-worldly atmosphere to the basic style of Hokusai in elaborate "surimono" and panoramic landscapes.
