Hijiya BunkeiJapanese, 1899 - 1951

Hijiya Bunkei (泥谷文景, 1899–1951) was a Nihonga painter. He was born in Kagawa Prefecture. In his late years, he used the artist name (go) of Goshōdō 五鐘洞. He studied painting under Himejima Chikugai (姫島竹外, d. 1928). After traveling around Kyushu, the traveled to the Korean Peninsula and China, and while in Manchuria, he produced a painting in collaboration with the Manchurian Prime Minister Zheng Xiaoxu 鄭孝胥. After returning to Japan, he held solo exhibitions at Takashimaya department store every year. He was also a prolific haiku poet. He died in 1951 at the age of 52.
