Yamamoto Shōun

Born in Köchi City. Given name Mosaburö. Used the gö Shökoku as an illustrator; since Shökoku can be read as Matsutani, he is also known as Matsutani Shöun. At 13 moved to Tokyo to study nanga painting with Taki Watei. From 1902 exhibited Japanese-style paintings with Nihon Bijutsu Kyökai and later in Bunten and Teiten. From age 20 worked as illustrator for Füzoku gahö, a pictorial journal dealing with “popular places in Tokyo.” Moku-hanga of traditional subjects including bijin-ga, kachö-ga, and landscapes published by Matsuki Heikichi.
