Kawamura ManshūJapanese, 1880 - 1942
Kawamura Manshū (川村曼舟, 1880–1942) was a Nihonga painter born and raised in Kyoto. He studied painting under Yamamoto Shunkyo. He studied alongside Omura Taiun (小村大雲, 1883–1938), Shōda Kakuyū (庄田鶴友, 1879–1948), and Hattori Shunyō (服部春陽, born 1883), and together, they became known as the Four Heavenly Guardians (Shitennō) of Shunkyo. He received the tokusen award at the Bunten exhibition, and he participated in the Kansai Painting group (Kansai gadan). Later, he worked as a judge for the Teiten exhibitions, and he became a member of the Geijutsu-in. He was a professor at the Kyoto City Painting School, and he also served as the dean of the school.
