DescriptionOni (Otsu-e or folk art style), ink and color on paper; mounted as hanging scroll. An oni, the legendary Japanese demon, is depicted here as an impish, horned creature with washes of red-brown and black inks. He wears a monk’s robe and carries a folded parasol stuck through straps on his back. With one of his three-fingered hands he strokes his chin in apparent puzzlement; the other he supports his lop-sided pose.

The signature Oju Zeshin suggests that Zeshin painted this by request; the style of the signature suggests a late 1880s date.
