DescriptionThis long scroll depicts Shimoda Harbor with the squadrons of Commodore Perry, officers, men from Perry's ships; drawings of their uniforms, utensils, servants, flags, various activities (including the photographing of a Shimoda courtesan (Okichi?) "to show the American King"); a geisha party; huge bust portraits of Perry, his leaders, lists of feasts provided for the Americans and a careful duplicate of a Shimoda tombstone to a dead U.S. Marine.
